How to do a collection:
Collections are done on an appointment basis only. Most stud dogs are most
receptive when a "teaser" bitch is used. If it's at all possible to bring a
"teaser" bitch along with to your appointment that would be best. It is also
possible that we would have a bitch in season that could work as a teaser. Just
let us know.
How is Semen Frozen?
After the semen is collected, it is then examined under a microscope to see how
healthy the sperm is. Motility and forward swimming is analyzed and graded. A
sperm count and a morphology report is performed and it is at that time we
determine whether we should go ahead with the freezing. The semen is frozen in
pellet form.
A pellet will be thawed to determine the motility after freeze and then it is
determined how many breedings we will seperate it into. A breeding unit consists
of 100 million live normal cells.
How Safe is My Frozen Semen
The semen is stored in Liquid Nitrogen Tanks. All breedings are stored in
seperate vials on seperate canes. We don't depend on electricity to power our
tanks and have the tanks filled routinely every couple of weeks to insure safe
high levels of liquid.
Can my dog's semen be shipped across
the country or out of State?
Yes. We can prepare the semen for shipment to any country that will accept
shipments and anywhere in the united states. In most cases the owner of the
bitch pays for all shipment and preperation costs. The shipping costs vary
depending on where it is being shipped. The semen is sent in a shipping
container.
Can I share shipping costs if two
different stud dogs have semen going to the same place?
Yes definately. It is very possible to share expenses going to another country
to another collection center somewhere in the states. There is space in the
shipper to send a couple of breedings.
What is the best age to have my dog
collected?
Ideally a stud dog should be collected between ages 2-3 years to 6-7 years.
Having said this, of course there are exceptions. This is all dependant on the
individual dog. I have a dog that is still being collected at age 13.
